• African Inclusive Initiative Rwanda

    The African Inclusive Initiative Rwanda is an initiative that implements economic programs in East Africa with a focus on Rwanda, aimed at people with the lowest incomes. Our programs create sustainable employment for this target group.

    Within AIIR, the focus is on two programs:
    1) development of the agricultural sector;
    2) development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME’s).

Agriculture

The agricultural program is designed together with the farming communities. The farmers are trained and supervised on how to develop a future-oriented agricultural company. We focus on cultivation techniques that are climate resistant, increase biodiversity and have a significant impact on the farmer’s income. Our approach works! The costs are less than USD 200 per farmer to lift them and their families out of poverty. Our goal is to include 3,000 farmers in the program over the next 3 years.

MSME

Within the MSME development program, promising young entrepreneurs are trained in developing a well-thought-through business plan. After the plan has been developed, the entrepreneurs are guided in obtaining equipment to further expand their business. This equipment is rented from a dedicated local company, Equip Rwanda Ltd. The costs for training are USD 75 per entrepreneur. In the coming years, we want to offer 1,000 entrepreneurs the opportunity to set up or expand their business.

MSME program

80% of the economic sector in Rwanda consists of mini-companies.

Forced by high unemployment, many young people start their own business. Only a limited number survive the first years and manage to establish a stable company. Often these companies have great difficulty in accessing capital to finance the growth of their company. Banks are hesitant and demand high interest rates or personal guarantees to hedge their risk.

To change this situation, AIIR has developed a lease program together with a number of local organizations with the aim of supporting promising entrepreneurs. Within the program, the entrepreneurs undergo entrepreneurial training, develop a business plan and are assessed by a credit committee. If the process has been completed successfully, the young people are linked to a microfinance institution or an equipment rental company and a lease contract is offered for the necessary capital goods.

The program offers many young entrepreneurs the opportunity to grow further and thus generate a stable income.
